KATRINA: RESPONSE TIMELINE

I'm glad to see most folks commenting applaud the archiving work done here rather than take it as an opportunity to engage in assinine partisan rhetoric. Yes, the state and local folks could have been better prepared and were overwhelmed. Yes, everyone involved in helping is a hero.

What liberals object to is the budget cuts to FEMA (and the fact that 3/4 of their dollars were diverted to terrorism post 9/11). Quite a number of resources were mustered as this blog points out. But the proof is in the pudding. People languished and died because they just didn't get enough help and the only entity with the resources to mount such an effort is the federal government. And the information that the FEMA folks had made it seem as if they weren't watching the news. You don't need a psychic to find out what Geraldo reported on (the convention center) the day before.

Would eliminating these budget cuts, and a continued focus on natural disasters, have helped FEMA's response? It's impossible to know. But it's not an unreasonable suggestion that they very well might have.
